If you have decided that you would like to have a career in HVAC, you will want to make sure that you are taking the time to find a quality trade school in your area, and preferably one that is well known for their fantastic HVAC program. Of course, you will want to know just what it is that you can expect from this experience so you can begin to get ready for it. Here are some things to know:
You May Need To Buy Your Own Tools
While there will be a lot of course work to do, you will have a lot of hands on training as well, both in a classroom and in a real setting outside of school. You are going to need your own tools for this, as not everyone can share tools and this will ensure that you are ready to search for employment once you have graduated. You will most likely need a specific set of tools so you will want to wait until you can speak with the admissions counselor before you start buying tools. They will have a list of everything you need and you might find that a few of the things may be given to you from the school as a part of what your tuition pays for. Otherwise, you will need to seek out the rest of the tools and have them ready to take to class.
You Will Need To Be Able To Travel Some
Throughout your HVAC maintenance training and schooling, you may be asked to go to a few different HVAC companies for some hands on training. You might be the only student at the location or there might be a group of you. Either way, the trade school is most likely not going to be able to provide transportation for this so you will need to be able to get there on your own. Since it can be hard to find HVAC companies in some areas willing to work with students, your school may have to send you to a location that's an hour or so away. If you are lucky, all of the locations will be close to your town, but you will want to be prepared for extra driving. This means that if you intend to go to school via the bus line, you will need to make arrangements to have access to a vehicle when it comes time for apprentice work and training. You should be given a schedule of these times well in advance.
You may also want to talk with your admissions counselor about other things that you need to prepare for. After all, the more you prepare, the easier this will be for you.
